Core Points
Strategy achieved $21 billion in digital asset gains in the third quarter. Its Bitcoin holdings reached 848,000 after purchasing 334 coins. In addition, the company also spent $176 million to repurchase STRC preferred shares. Currently, bitcoin, preferred stock and dollar liquidity together constitute the company's balance sheet strategy.
Update on October 5: Beyond regular Bitcoin holdings
Strategy's latest announcement released on October 5 not only includes a regular weekly Bitcoin purchase, but also demonstrates that the company is increasing its Bitcoin reserves while using cash to manage preferred shares and US dollar resources to support its long-term reserve holding ability. The $21 billion gain reflects fluctuations in the value of Bitcoin. The quarterly data measures the growth in the value of Strategy's digital assets during the quarter, but it does not amount to $21 billion in operating income or cash available for new purchases, as the company did not cash in on selling Bitcoin.
Its importance lies in the size of the exposure. The 848,000 bitcoins held on the balance sheet means that changes in bitcoin prices can add billions to the value of digital assets reported by companies. Therefore, the financing structure surrounding these holdings is equally related to the number of coins Strategy owns.
"Strategy reported digital asset revenue of $21 billion in the third quarter of 2026. Last week, we acquired 334 BTC units and bought back $176 million of STRC. As of October 4, 2026, we held 848,000 BTC and US$5.7 billion in U.S. dollar assets." -- Michael Saylor (@saylor), October 5, 2026
Simultaneous Bitcoin purchases and STRC repurchases
The latest purchase of 334 bitcoins is less than the 1,665 bitcoins increment reported in the previous week. However, the accompanying STRC buyback suggests that the company is continuing its broader strategic thinking rather than viewing Bitcoin accumulation as an isolated decision. This update continues this model: capital is allocated for bitcoin purchases, preferred stock repurchases, and dollar liquidity management.
This combination is at the core of Strategy's operating model. Buying Bitcoin increases its exposure to Bitcoin, while buying back preferred shares changes the obligations and securities structure on the balance sheet that coexist with that exposure.
Relationship between STRC and Strategy Bitcoin Model
STRC is a variable rate Series A perpetual rollover preferred stock issued by Strategy. It gives investors preferred securities status in the company rather than directly owning Bitcoin, with dividend obligations that the company needs to manage over time. When a company buys back STRC, it uses cash to cancel preferred shares it has purchased from the market. This reduces the number of STRC in circulation, while Strategy continues to meet its dividend obligations on the remaining shares.
