AI, ECDSA and Bitcoin's final outcome? Ledger CTO refutes the doomsday theory of cryptography

Ledger CTO Charles Guillemet: Concerns about AI cracking Bitcoin encryption are exaggerated

Ledger Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Charles Guillemet refuted panic remarks that artificial intelligence (AI) may crack Bitcoin encryption in the coming months. He said there was currently no sign of an urgent breakthrough that could break through the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA), the cryptographic system used to secure Bitcoin transactions.

Is this fear exaggerated?

Guillemet further explained that if asymmetric cryptography is breached,"Bitcoin will become our least important little problem." Internet security, banking systems, secure communications and critical infrastructure may all face serious crises. Although he acknowledged that recent mathematical advances have been impressive, he said they do not represent an actual breakthrough for ECDSA.

"If your logic is 'You can't trust anything until it proves unbreakable,' then congratulations. By this standard, nothing is safe, including hashes."

Guillemet called on people to pay attention to cryptographic research and take potential risks seriously, but warned against taking theoretical advances as a sign of an imminent cryptographic crisis. He believes that there is still a long way to go before the so-called end of encryption.

Ethereum researchers 'warnings and industry response

The above comments came after Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake issued a shocking warning. Drake pointed out the potential risks AI poses to cryptography, urged the industry to calmly prepare for "bunker mode" and advised cryptocurrency holders to consider moving funds to new addresses where public keys have never been exposed. He believes that ECDSA could be cracked in months rather than years.

Drake cited recent mathematical breakthroughs and the latest release of OpenAI as reasons to take this risk seriously. However, he also added that holders should not rush to move assets because a hasty move could cause greater harm. The researcher called on major cryptocurrency platforms to strengthen cold storage security and urged the industry to accelerate its transition to hash-based cryptography. He emphasized that the industry should be prepared but not panic.

Theoretical threats can wait

Although Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin agrees that rapid progress in AI-assisted mathematics may pose new risks to existing encryption systems, he warns against rushing wallet migration. Buterin pointed out that transferring funds without proper planning could create new risks for users.

At the same time, well-known Bitcoin developer and Casa co-founder Jameson Lopp said that worrying about the encryption algorithm being cracked was too advanced. He added that the industry has "more pressing practical issues to deal with." "Theoretical future issues can wait."
