Binance's Ethereum reserves fall to six-month lows, withdrawal transactions hit record highs
CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost reported that Binance's Ethereum (ETH) reserves have dropped to 3.47 million, the lowest level in six months. Despite the huge selling pressure on the cryptocurrency market, Binance's Ethereum withdrawal transactions exceeded 320,000 on October 6, setting a record high.
Darkfost linked the increase in Ethereum withdrawals to potential long-term holding strategies, self-custody preferences, and opportunities involving pledge or revenue generation. CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost revealed that Binanhang's Ethereum reserves have reached a six-month low, while withdrawal transactions have recorded unprecedented levels.
The decline in reserves is in sync with the decline in the market
According to his latest analysis, Binance's ETH position decreased from 3.57 million to 3.47 million in three days. This decline was linked to widespread cryptocurrency losses, with Ethereum falling by 11%, wiping out $38 billion in market value. At the same time, the broader altcoin market lost more than $110 billion, reflecting the huge selling pressure on major digital assets.
The surge in withdrawal activity reflects a shift in investor behavior
CryptoQuant data showed that Binance held approximately 3.92 million ETH in August, and reserves began to decline throughout September. By October, open positions had dropped to 3.47 million ETH, a decrease of 11.5% from the peak in August. The change removed approximately 450,000 ETH from Binance reserves, bringing ETH holdings on exchanges to their lowest level in six months.
It is worth noting that during the market adjustment period, withdrawal activity increased, and investors transferred Ethereum out of Binance even when market prices fell. The second CryptoQuant chart shows that more than 320,000 Ethereum withdrawal transactions were recorded on October 6, setting a record high. The previous surge in withdrawals occurred during the 2021 cryptocurrency bull market, although data at the time were below the latest recorded levels.
Potential motivations: Long-term holding versus self-custody
Darkfost connects this high activity with the possibility that investors may seek longer holding periods and the opportunity to deploy its Ethereum elsewhere. According to the analyst, some holders may prefer self-custody arrangements to wait for more favorable market conditions.
The analysis also determined that pledges and other revenue-producing activities may be where Ethereum extracted from the exchange is going. At the same time, the withdrawal transaction indicator measures the frequency of transfers, rather than the total amount of Ethereum leaving Binance.
The chart also shows that withdrawal activity is increasing as Ethereum prices fall in the broader cryptocurrency market. With more than 320,000 withdrawal transactions on October 6, Binance's Ethereum reserves reached their lowest level in six months.
