Focus story this week: Samsung brings stablecoins to millions of mobile phones
Starting from the last week of October, Samsung will add USDC transfer functionality to its Samsung Wallet for eligible US Galaxy users, covering approximately 82 million devices for the first batch. Users can send USDC across borders and transfer funds to bank accounts in more than 60 countries around the world without downloading a separate encryption application. Samsung does not charge a fee for sending USDC to overseas wallets, but recipient wallets or exchanges may charge separate fees. Bastion, a U.S. regulated stablecoin infrastructure provider, is responsible for custody, identity verification, compliance and cross-border remittances. Coinbase Prime, as a sub-custodian, holds all USDC stored in Samsung Wallet. Solana and Sui provide the underlying blockchain infrastructure.
The highlight of this service is what users "don't need" to do: no need to manage private keys, no need to store mnemonics, and no need to open a separate encrypted account. The service runs within apps that already exist on the phones of millions of Samsung users. Whether users actually use it will depend on rates, exchange rates and the smoothness of the experience, but Samsung's distribution capabilities alone make this collaboration different from typical crypto partnership announcements.
The company sells approximately 250 million devices every year, with more than 1 billion devices active globally. Even if the initial adoption rate is low, this marks a meaningful and large-scale entry of stablecoins into the mainstream consumer hardware space.
