Gas和无Gas交易

Every transaction on the blockchain consumes computational resources. This consumption is measured in “gas”. The gas fees are paid using Toncoin, the native cryptocurrency of TON. “Gas-free transactions” mean that users don’t need to worry about paying gas fees. However, this doesn’t mean that gas fees disappear or become free of charge. It simply means that users don’t need to worry about not having enough Toncoin to cover the fees. For example, “gas-free USDT” transactions are processed using USDT available in the user’s account balance.

What is a Tonkeeper Battery?

A Tonkeeper Battery is a small off-chain account within Tonkeeper. When a user doesn’t have enough Toncoin, the battery will take care of paying the fees on their behalf. Fees are calculated based on the number of transactions: a single transaction costs simply the amount of Toncoin required for the transfer; multiple transactions may involve tokens or NFTs, and even more complex transactions may require higher fees. Users can recharge their batteries in various ways—using bank cards, USDT, or even other cryptocurrencies like Notcoin for in-app purchases. Once recharged, the battery can be used to pay for various types of transactions, including transfers of tokens, NFTs, operations related to equity pools, and DNS records.

Differences between gas-free transactions and batteries

Gas-free transactions make transactions simpler—no additional setup is required. There’s no need to purchase Toncoin or recharge the battery. However, gas-free transactions are limited to alternative cryptocurrencies with known behavior and low volatility, such as stablecoins like USDT.

Batteries do not have this limitation. They can be charged by users and used for various transactions. This includes transferring any tokens or NFTs, as well as performing other operations using smart contracts.

Charging batteries using tokens

To charge batteries with supported cryptocurrency tokens, simply send them from the wallet that needs to charge to the battery.ton address. When a user initiates a transfer to battery.ton, Tonkeeper does not send this transaction to the TON network. Instead, it sends it to the Tonkeeper relay service. The relay service checks the transaction and verifies whether it can be paid the minimum fee. Then, it records the transaction in the battery’s balance and publishes it along with the transaction fee. Once this transaction is completed, the user’s battery balance increases, allowing them to conduct further transactions.

Wallet abstraction W5

This architecture benefits from Wallet Smart Contract Version 5, also known as W5. Tonkeeper has developed original technologies for zero-gas transactions and unlimited scalability. In July 2024, the TON Core team and Tonkeeper jointly established an open standard. All wallets in the TON ecosystem still support the previous standard, Wallet Version 4, although they lack the special features of zero-gas transactions. In the future, all new accounts created in Tonkeeper and other TON ecosystem wallets will be created using W5 by default. Users can access both Version 4 and W5, and easily switch between them.

Although version 4 does not support processing signed transactions via internal messaging systems, Tonkeeper Battery has been working with v4 wallets since April 2024. As of mid-June 2024, Tonkeeper Battery has processed over 2 million transactions. When users sign transactions, Tonkeeper deducts the required fees from the Battery account to pay for the gas needed to execute the transaction. The amount of Toncoins required for this payment is then sent to the user’s wallet, after which the transaction is finalized. This process incurs a slight delay of about 20 seconds, as the wallet contract needs to receive sufficient Toncoins before processing the transaction.

Using v4 wallets allows for transactions without the need for gas payments.

This represents a combination of v4’s battery-based solution and transactions without the need for gas payments: each transaction is delayed until the wallet has received enough Toncoins. Then, an additional USDT payment is made to the relay service.

This is the most efficient way to achieve transactions without the need for gas payments. However, Tonkeeper never supported this method and is now migrating to the W5 wallet. MyTonWallet already implements this mechanism. But it requires users to log in through Telegram to prevent potential abuse. This is because users can withdraw their Toncoins even before the USDT transaction is completed.

Efficiency

A common benchmark for measuring the efficiency of Battery and gas-free transactions is regular token transfers. The following table summarizes the costs associated with these processes, including both fees and delays. This compares different ways in which these features can be utilized in V4 and W5 wallets.
