At the time of the dominant index reading, Bitcoin traded at $81,773, down 1.91% from the previous day. Bitcoin prices fell but the dominant index rose, indicating that altcoins fell much more than Bitcoin during the same time period. Bitcoin's trading volume reached $42.4 billion that day, with a market capitalization of $1.64 trillion. The volume-to-market ratio was about 2.6 per cent, suggesting moderate selling rather than disorderly liquidation events.
The divergence between the decline in BTC prices and the rise in the dominant index is a structural signal worthy of attention: it reflects the relative weakness of altcoins, rather than the rotation of funds specifically flowing to Bitcoin. Historically, this pattern has often occurred in the "delayed altcoin season" setting, where the strength of altcoins lags behind the recovery of Bitcoin for several weeks.
Sentiment indicators and market divergence
Despite the risk-averse nature of price movements, the Fear Greed Index is still at 64 (greedy). This is an unusual divergence: greedy readings accompanying price declines and bitcoin-dominated index rises could indicate residual position risk in a portfolio with heavy altcoins.
CoinMarketCap's latest global indicator shows a change in the dominant index of +0.47 percentage points over a 24-hour period, confirming the intraday direction visible to the BTC.D instrument on TradingView. If the dominant index remains above 60%, this will bring the dominant index series to its highest sustained level since the beginning of the third quarter of 2026.
Key monitoring points and indicators
60% psychological resistance level: This is a psychologically important resistance level for the Bitcoin dominated index. Historical records show that maintaining the dominant index above 60% for multiple trading days is usually accompanied by long-term weakness of altcoins. Confirmation requires the dominant index to close above 60% on multiple daily candlestick charts, rather than just one-day intraday fluctuations.
Total market capitalization trajectory: This is the second variable. If the benchmark of $2.77 trillion is further compressed and the bitcoin-dominated index remains high, it suggests that the sell-off is comprehensive rather than just against altcoins. Conversely, if the market value recovers and the dominant index declines, it indicates that capital has re-entered the altcoin market.
Bitcoin ETF Fund Flow: This is the third perspective. The most recent trading day showed a net outflow of $91.72 million on October 6, compared with an inflow of $93 million on the seventh day. This is a near-neutral institutional positioning signal and does not clearly support the structural Bitcoin buying that supports a higher leading index. Spot market demand for bitcoin relative to altcoin purchases is a clearer indicator of whether the dominant index reading is driven by rotation or purely selling.
