Ethereum L2 Starknet's share price soared 20% after announcing it plans to transform into L1

Starknet considers transforming into an independent public chain, aiming to create the first fully quantum resistant network.

Starknet, an Ethereum extension network built by StarkWare, said it is considering transforming into an independent blockchain. The project wrote on X (formerly Twitter):"We are actively considering becoming Layer 1 (L1). This will make Starknet the first network to be fully quantum resistant, and our target year is 2027."

On Friday, the price of the STRK token was around US$0.073, up about 20% in 24 hours. The price is much higher than the approximately $0.03 it paid in April this year, when StarkWare laid off employees in pursuit of revenue.

Layer 1 (L1) refers to basic blockchains such as Bitcoin or Ethereum that verify and secure their own transactions. Starknet currently belongs to Layer 2 (L2), a network built on top of Ethereum, which packages transactions into batches and relies on the base layer for security.

Starknet's core selling point is its ability to deal with quantum computers. Quantum computers may in the future crack the elliptic curve cryptography used by Bitcoin and Ethereum (the mathematical principle behind digital signatures that prove ownership of digital currencies). Starknet's own proof mechanism relies on a hash function, which breaks up data into fixed fingerprints and is considered quantum resistant. Although some elliptic curve components are still retained, Starknet said in its roadmap released on June 30 that it would replace them.

StarkWare CEO Eli Ben-Sasson proposed the idea in a series of tweets on X, pointing out that quantum threats "may be much closer than we think" and that the rapid development of artificial intelligence in mathematics brings a second level of risk, so the need to enter "bunker mode"-a phrase that became widely known recently by Ethereum researcher Justin Drake's call to action earlier this week.

Ben-Sasson writes that as L2, Starknet relies on Ethereum's security, which means it can only achieve the same level of quantum security as the underlying layer. He said that the network needs Ethereum to quickly advance relevant upgrades; if Ethereum fails to do so, becoming L1 will be one of the options.

According to ethereum.org, Ethereum's own roadmap plans to complete the construction of core post-quantum infrastructure around 2029, after the Ethereum Foundation established a dedicated post-quantum team in January this year. Drake said at the time that "the timetable is accelerating." In contrast, according to Ben-Sasson, Bitcoin does not make such commitments.

Ben-Sasson pointed out that becoming L1 will allow Starknet to control its security upgrades independently without having to wait for Ethereum or Bitcoin to take the lead. This also means that Starknet will ensure its own security, rather than borrowing Ethereum's protection-this is the arrangement that defines Layer 2. The statement did not mention how existing applications and users would migrate.
