The U.S. Treasury Department OFAC has officially listed a country's cryptocurrency industry as a target for sanctions, expanding its authority to target any individual or entity operating in the relevant industry, regardless of its location. Nearly 60 entities and individuals related to a certain country are also subject to sanctions. A Ukraine broker has processed more than$+ in cryptocurrency payments since 2023 to assist a country's armed forces in selling oil-the largest publicly disclosed channel for circumvention of cryptocurrency sanctions.
Hupzy's point of view: Including the entire country's cryptocurrency industry as a target of sanctions is a structural upgrade-the transformation of cryptocurrency from a marginal sanctions tool to a major enforcement target.$ The amount of 100M + confirms the role of cryptocurrencies as a cross-border settlement layer in sanctioned countries, which has a dual impact: it not only verifies its effectiveness, but also incurs more stringent compliance reviews, involving exchanges and stablecoin issuers.
For Bitcoin, the expansion of sanctions has increased regulatory pressure on top of the existing geopolitical risk premium (from conflicts in one country pushing up oil prices and interest rates). Short-term compliance frictions on major exchanges may weaken liquidity, but there is still a structural need for clearing without licensing.
