Coinbase officially launches options trading function
Coinbase further expands its layout in the traditional financial field by directly launching zero-commission stock options trading on its main platform. Currently, U.S. users can trade call and put options on a variety of popular U.S. stocks on Coinbase without having to pay option contract fees that traditional brokers typically charge.
The move is part of Coinbase's broader equity business expansion plan, which begins in early 2026. Following a limited pilot in December 2025, Coinbase will fully open its stock trading service to all U.S. users in early 2026, providing 24/7 (5 days a week) commission-free trading rights for more than 8,000 stocks and ETF products.
The new options contract feature further improves its product line, allowing retail traders to obtain more comprehensive investment tools in a single account. The platform integrates native risk models and margin management tools, allowing traders to manage both traditional derivatives positions and spot cryptocurrency positions under the same interface without having to switch between different applications or brokerage accounts.
Level 1 and Level 2 options trading for U.S. stocks is supported in Coinbase's "Simple Trading" and "Advanced Retail Trading" interfaces. The user experience includes stock order forms, time effectiveness options, Level 2 order books, and National Best Bid Quotes (NBBO) displays. These features are only available to customers holding brokerage accounts with Coinbase Capital Markets.
An important step towards the strategy of "universal exchange"
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has been publicly advocating the vision of an "Everything Exchange" that integrates cryptocurrencies, stocks, options, and tokenized real-world assets on one platform. The launch of options trading is a concrete step towards this goal, narrowing the gap between Coinbase and traditional full-service brokerages.
Coinbase said the expansion is an important part of its vision of a "universal exchange" that aims to integrate traditional financial markets with digital assets. In 2026, this strategy will advance rapidly. Following the previous launch of pre-initial public offering (IPO) derivatives, Coinbase has further extended its business landscape from cryptocurrencies and secondary market stock trading to the primary market.
For users, its practical appeal is obvious: managing a diversified investment portfolio covering stocks and cryptocurrencies in one place and adopting a unified margin and risk framework eliminates the historical frictional costs of forcing active traders to use multiple platforms. By waiving options trading commissions, Coinbase competes directly with retail-oriented brokerages that have long used a zero-rate structure to attract and retain customers.
